19th century novelist, Wilkie Collins, is sometimes credited with inventing the crime novel. Whether this is true or not, his most famous books, 'The Moonstone' and 'The Woman in White' are still popular today and very readable in spite of the Victorian style and idiom.
What many people don't realise is that Wilkie Collins was a very unconventional Victorian who spurned the rules of of his social class in his primary relationships with women.
