Victorian Samplers - Embroidery Then and Now

In order to master the art of embroidery, as young Victorian women in the 16th century were encouraged to do, a wide variety of embroidery stitches were sewn randomly on a piece of fabric as reference material. There were no printed patterns for embroidery so the samplers could be referred to when particular stitches were chosen to be used on future pieces. They are referred to as Victorian samplers because they ere actual samples of embroidery stitches learned.
